The spirit of the world teaches us to lay up for ourselves, while the Holy Spirit teaches us to be willing to help those around us, as we are able.

The proud resist God: in their understanding they resist the truths of God; in their will they resist the laws of God; in their passions they resist the providence of God; therefore, no wonder that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Without God's grace our lives eventually become miserable and retched. This happens so that there is a reason for us to turn to him and be saved, born again, and receive His peace that passes all understanding. Not the kind of shallow short lived peace the world gives.

So suppose you see your brother or sister who has need of food or clothing, and you says to them, "Go in peace; keep warm and well fed," but you do nothing about their physical needs, what good is that? So you see, your claimed belief in God isn't enough. Unless your belief produces deeds that support your belief, your belief is dead and useless.

So then this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your selfish ways. You have planted much, but your harvested will be little. You will eat, but never be truly satisfied. You will drink, but you will never quench your thirst. You will put on clothes, but you will never feel covered. And you will earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.” (James 4:6-8)(James 2:15-17)(Haggai 1:6-8)
